I'm a caucasion that grew up in the northeast that absolutely loves Pepe's food. a car mechanic from Cuba that worked on my parents car in the Keys recommended this place for being the closest to the style of food he ate while in Cuba. I never had anything bad here, so don't be afraid to order anything that sounds good. my parents especially love a dish that I can't remember the name of, but on their menu with the description, they say the translation means "old clothes". it's like a beef stew but much better than any American version. they also have awesome desserts and serve alcohol and soda pop. during the evening hours, they have a live band playing outside to entertain the guests that sit outside not only to eat at the restaurant, but for the people lounging around the outside bar they have setup with many tables and chairs. they also allowed us to sit outside with our 10 pound dog so she didn't have to sit in the hot car while we ate. then we were able to walk around Mallorey Square afterwards, and watch the sunset. very pleasant memories. during our meal, we could see and hear the native roosters that are protected by law. nobody is allowed to injure them in any way because I think they're an endangered species. the local people complain about them for the noise and dirt they make, but for tourists, they're fun.

First and last time. Food was ok, service below average. "Yucca" was very dry and hard it was missing olive oil, "yellow platains" were burned, "picadillo" was tasteless; "churrasco" hard and tasteless also; "ceviche" missing lime, the fish was cut into big pieces. the presentation was very poor. The "ropa vieja" was ok; "black beans" tasted like canned beans; the "oxtail" was ok. The service was awful, the waitress came took our order, not very friendly. Our glasses of water were emptied and she came to our table and placed the carafe of water without serving us, considering they were not busy at least she should have served the glass. On top of everything they add a 18% gratuity and in your bill they ask for more(additional tip). Outrageus! You don't have the choice of leaving the tip based on the service, and with that in mind the waitress's work ethic was very poor...this poor attitude must be that no matter what the tip was already added to your bill and she did not have to work for it. Just because of that I won't even give them a second chance.

Didn't get to eat here, but the drinks were great. Nice atmosphere, great location and service.

This was a spur of the moment pick and it was wonderful! We were seated on the patio, so we heard the band in the courtyard playing and could watch the dancing on the closed-circuit tvs. The entrees were delicious, as were the conch fritter appetizers and desserts - the mango ice cream in particular. It wasn't "cheap" but it wasn't too expensive, either. And you definitely got your money's worth.

The courtyard is so romantic. The music is not too loud (rare for Duval). Must have a mojito. The paella is to die for but there is a 45 minute wait. You can call ahead and order it. It is $50 and serves 2. They have a sampler platter that is great if it is your first time eating cuban. Everything on the platter was incredible. I will return the next time I go to Key West.
